Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a medium lanceolate point with a flattened to elliptical cross section.  Some cruder examples have had a median ridge.  The blade is primarily excurvate towards the tip and parallel sides.  Many examples have been re-sharpened and have the widest part of the blade at the junction of the blade and hafting region.  The bottom portion of the blade is primarily straight, but may be slightly articulated on some examples.  The base may vary from slightly concave to deep concave.  The base of this point is usually thick.  The flaking pattern may vary from transverse parallel to collateral.

Size Measurements:  Length - 50 to 90 mm,  Width -  15 to 40 mm (***based on a small sample size***)

Related / Associated Points:

Additional Comments:

This type is similar to the Plainview type and was previously mistyped as a Plainview.  A primary difference is that the St. Mary's point often has a narrower blade and has a thicker hafting region.  Also the St. Mary's type lacks the basal grinding seen on the Plainview type (Bronnichsen and Turnmire, 1999).

These points were called Plainview Angostura at the Levi Site.  They were originally called Plainview at the St. Mary's Hall site.  Perttula (2004) argues that the Miniature Plainview point named by Kelley (1983) should be included in this type.

Point Validity:    Valid Type

Kerr is an archaeologist who conducted an extensive study on the Paleo points from the Wilson-Leonard site along with Susan W. Dial.  This was the study that identified the key differences between this type and the Plainview type.  She is considered an expert in Paleo points of Texas.  This type was named in a publication by Michael Collins and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
